Business Improvement Area >>

A Business Improvement Area (BIA) is a geographically defined urban area containing primarily non-residential properties.  The BIA concept allows businesses and property owners to work cooperatively to manage downtown as a resource and business destination.  Under the BIA concept business people in the prescribed area levy themselves and use the funds for beautification, promotional campaigns,  government lobbying, cooperative advertising and parking and transportation issues. The levy (10% additional business tax) is administered by a Board of Management which is elected from the membership of the downtown business and property owners. The boundaries for the BIA in Corner Brook are from Colemans on Caribou Road to the overpass on Main Street and from the Glynmill Inn to the entrance to Broadway from Lewin parkway.  It includes all businesses within these areas.  The Corner Brook Downtown Business Improvement Area was established by the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1988.
